Chat with the TCC Staff

April 24, 2003, 2300 GMT

+ anderson has arrived.
- anderson just left.
+ Bernie has arrived.
+ BertK has arrived.
<BertK> Hello Bernie
- Bernie just left.
+ Bernie has arrived.
+ kn has arrived.
+ Cathy has arrived.
<kn> Hi Everyone!
<Bernie> sorry, Bert, I was busy with something else and didn't see you there
+ kelli has arrived.
<Bernie> it's an honor to chat with you at last
<Bernie> after 3 years :)
<BertK> it's an honor for me Bernie
<Bernie> hi kn
<BertK> someday we'll talk in person
<kn> Hi Bernie!
<BertK> hi everyone
<Bernie> I'm sure--but I hope it's because I come to Hawaii rather than you come to Pennsylvania!
<BertK> good morning (afternoon?) :-)
<Bernie> my wife's visited Hawaii and KEEPS going on about how beautiful is
<kelli> Aloha Everyone
<Bernie> but she hasn't yet offered to take me there :)
<Bernie> aloha, Kelli
<Bernie> evening here, Bert
<BertK> bernie, take a look at some of our "sightseeing" videos
<Bernie> wilco
<BertK> sorry, Bernie, I'm actually in Kobe Japan right now
<Bernie> but it's not the same thing....
<BertK> and it's 8 am
<Bernie> oh my
<Bernie> hence the konichiwa or whatever?
<BertK> just managed to crawl out of bed
<Bernie> you sluggard you--8:00 am and still in bed?
+ joy has arrived.
<BertK> yes ... ohaiyogozaimasu
<Bernie> giggle
<Bernie> please translate!
<Bernie> btw, my wife's about to callme ti dinner
<BertK> yep, 8 am, Japan begins late and stays up late; most stores open at 10 am
<Bernie> and I'm a traditional British husband, which I will have to obey
<BertK> where are you in PA?
<Bernie> justb inj case I have to leave in a hurry, let me say how much I've enjoyed the conference, once again
<Bernie> I'm in the SW corner--about 50 miles east of Pittsburgh
<BertK> Bernie, did you encounter any difficulties?
<Bernie> my wife was born and raised in Pittsburgh, which is why I ended up here
<Bernie> well, here and there, of course--especially in the live sessions--sound and access speeed--things you no doubt already are aware of
<Bernie> but other than that, nbo
<Bernie> and I was--and am--coming to you over a 33K modem!
<BertK> how did your chat session go?
<BertK> oh I see. 33K is a challenge these days
<Bernie> pretty well--I find it hard to focus when here are more than about 5 or 6 people
<Bernie> too many threads going on simultaneously, and I'm not sure how to handle that
<BertK> true, easier to command control when f2f and you can see the nonverbal expressions
<Bernie> the sessions where I've been with 4 or 5 other folks ahev been gentile and focussed and much more--how can I say--hmmmmmm..... amenable
<Bernie> I've felt more comfortbale there, more at ease
<Bernie> but that could be a problem with my personality
+ craig has arrived.
<Bernie> I want EVERYONE to get the MOST out of EVERYTHING!!!
<Bernie> which just tells you I'm nerotic as heck (*lol*)
<Bernie> neurotic, that is
<Bernie> see what I mean (*giggle*)
+ Pia has arrived.
<Bernie> but I've learned sooo much, Bert and co
<Bernie> so thanks a million once again
<BertK> great bernie. you're welcome
<BertK> we really appreciate your involvement with us
<Bernie> I'll be back next year, for sure
<Bernie> say Hi to Donna Hendry for me :)
<BertK> we're happy that people can learn a lot from this kind of event
<BertK> pia, cathy -- how have things gone for you?
<Bernie> I'm coming round to the opinion that this is actually the best way to do a conference
<Bernie> but let me listen to pia and Cathy
<Pia> It's been good but I didn't have enough time to attend all the interestings sessions
<Cathy> Same here my work has interefered with attending as i would have liked
<Pia> Finals are coming up in two weeks for us
<Pia> I only got to attend two live sessions.
<BertK> pia, a lot of things happen at once so we try to "save" what we can
<Pia> I certainly appreciate that
<Cathy> The information sharing has been great
<BertK> the web casts are archived and the chats are logged and you can go back to them
<BertK> of course it's not quite the same ...
<Pia> Good
<Cathy> in fact in the last session someone mentioned a flex learning in Australia, I have already accessed that website...interesting info there
<Cathy> I would have known about that with out this conference, there is informaiton there I can use
<Pia> I didn't know we needed quicktime for the tours
<Pia> and eventhough I loaded it, it didn't work for me.
<Pia> I missed the Hawaiian post cards and the store
<BertK> cathy - thanks for the comment, that's one advantage of being a global event
<BertK> and that is we can "bring in" other countries without too much expense
<Cathy> Absolutely, I think that it is valuable to know what is going on in other countries...innovations are out there
<BertK> Pia, I sort of missed it too. However, our store wasn't generating much activity
<BertK> Folks, the live sessions that you attended, ie web casts, were they worthwhile?
<Pia> I don't know if it was just the time I logged in but I didn't see anyone at the Coconut_Cafe
<Cathy> I have Paloff and Pratt in person, but it was kind of neat to "see" them here
<BertK> how's that cathy?
<Cathy> I also enjoyed Flo Wiger because she is from the part of the country where I grew up
<Pia> In one there were sound problems and silence lags from the lecturer so sometimes we thought there was a sound problem but it turned out to be a lag.
<Cathy> They came to campus here and presented when we started developing the online program
<BertK> cathy what campus are you on?
<Cathy> Sheridan College/Gillette Campus
<BertK> flo is from N Dakota?
+ Mariejas has arrived.
<BertK> aloha marie g'day?
- Mariejas just left.
+ Mariejas has arrived.
<Cathy> And I grew up in NW South Dakota
<Bernie> dinner calls! Bye everyone--and THANKS!!!
- Bernie just left.
<BertK> hi marie thanks for joining us
<kn> Hi Marie!
<Mariejas> G'Day!
<joy> Aloha MarieJas!
<Mariejas> Aloha Joy and thanks for all your great work setting up the chats and bulletin board threads!
<BertK> Marie, how did your sessions go (or how are they going)?
<joy> No problem! Hope you enjoyed the conference!
- kn just left.
<Mariejas> Bert, We had a couple of good chats yesterday, I have had four delegates enrol is my next email roleplay game. I was a bit surprised we've had so few visit us at the forums though.
<BertK> Marie, Cathy here mentioned earlier how useful it was to learn about Australia's flexible learning effort.
+ karl has arrived.
<BertK> Marie, about how many were in your chats sessions?
<Mariejas> Yes, it's been a huge national initiative - a five year plan to upskill the workforce. Iwas involved in setting up the major prof dev program called learnscope
- joy just left.
<Cathy> I am just looking at Learnscope! Great stuff.
+ joy has arrived.
<BertK> and I've had the oppportunity to meet several of your Flex Learning leaders.
<BertK> Claire Brooks is the person that suggested I contact you.
<Mariejas> Yes Cathy - it got started in 1998 - I ran it for three years, but then it got bigger and now there is a management team
<Cathy> Interesting. I think we should to implement something like this, what a great program
<Mariejas> Yes - FLL is another initiative - personal PD programs for national leaders. The latest group of 41 are having their induction next week
- kelli just left.
<Mariejas> Yes, I know Claire well. She's great!
<Mariejas> Re chats - I think about 8 - 11, but a big Ozzie contingent. I think they have agreater sense of community!
<Cathy> I think Claire was in the last session I was in so that is where I got the info
<Cathy> I have also pulled up the flexible learning web
+ Toshi has arrived.
<karl> It sounds like all of you are involved in great endeavors!
<Mariejas> That's a treasure trove of info and the master site really.
<BertK> marie, it's a great sign that there's a strong Ozzie online community
<BertK> or at least many comfortable being online
+ Joanne has arrived.
<karl> Do all of you feel this conference is creating a sense of community?
<Cathy> If I were to do this again I would commit to do nothing but this start to finish.
<Mariejas> Yes! We started out with a content focused phase, but now realise it's community that sustains online learning, so that is wherethe investment is in Phase 2. Lots of funding to reserach and explore CoPS
<Cathy> Interesting, so that may be why the ongoing success
<Mariejas> Actually, I felt there was lack of community - I was surprised that there are so many delegates, but when you look at the interactions in the bulletin boards, it doesn't represent the numbers
<Mariejas> How do all these people participate? Do they download papers? Lurk? It had me rather puzzled.
<BertK> marie, good point. if you look at the "views" to posting ratio, it's about 20 to 1
<karl> Good point Marie. Any suggestions on how to increase the interaction? i am at a loss at the moment.
<Toshi> Hello. If I can know e-mail address of joined users in the right windows, that's will be helpful.
<karl> would collaborative projects brought to the conference help?
<Cathy> good idea karl!
<karl> in other words, work with people in groups prior to the conference so they all bring something with them?
<Cathy> That would be interesting and a good way to network, even internationally
<Mariejas> I was involved in the NET*Working Online conference last year. We did a lot more pre-publicity, we had a safe place for newbies, a very social space that people were in charge of etc. But this was a BIG nationally funded conference with over 2,300 deleg
<karl> What did they do at the conference that you felt could work here?
<Mariejas> I can send you the URL - it's still there.
<Mariejas> These conferences are HUGE jobs aren't they? And also what works in one context doesn't work in another.
<karl> true, but maybe we could apply similar strategies. And yes, it is a lot of work :-)
+ kelli has arrived.
<Mariejas> I'm really appreciative of what goes on behind the scenes - so I'd just like to acknowledge that. You've done a great job for sure.
<karl> any thoughts on what the "group" activities could be?
<karl> Thank you Marie!
<Mariejas> I suspect the Aus vocational training sector is a narrower audience than yours.
- Pia just left.
<BertK> Hi Joanne, we're wanting to find out how things have gone for you at this conference? thanks for joining us.
<Mariejas> For example, we tended to focus on activity-based events rather than academic papers. Our sector doesn't have the same "publish or perish" focus as higher ed. A very practical approach.
<kelli> Hello Joanne
- craig just left.
<Joanne> They've gone real well, Bert. Papers were accessable, nearly all of the presenters showed and the Horizon keynotes were a really super touch.
<Mariejas> I suspect the conference evaluation is available - that may help
<Joanne> The MOO group was awesome. I could spend days with them!
<kelli> Joanne, were you able to join any chat sessions?
<BertK> marie, we'll be posting the conference evaluation soon.
<karl> yes Marie, we are looking forward to some good thoughts and suggestions!
<Joanne> I pretty much lived online from 12 noon my time till 11:30 in the evening, attending nearly one of every time slot.
<karl> great Joanne!
<kelli> Fantastic, Joanne
<Joanne> I've attended the conference every year -- I'm an old timer. This one was really good.
<Mariejas> Anyway, thanks for the invitation. It was a good experience for us all to collaborate. I suspect our site was too comprehensive, but we're already plotting to repurpose!
<karl> how so? was it because of the interaction? or other activities? Your own participation?
<karl> Thanks Marie!
<karl> Your very welcome :-)
<Mariejas> Thanks for your support and responsiveness. It was much appreciated!
<Joanne> I did hunt wildly for the t shirts, like in 2001. Guess not this year. :)
<karl> Not a problem. We all enjoyed working with you Marie!
<joy> Thank you Marie, we'll be looking for you in 2004! :-)
<karl> Sorry Joanne, no t-shirts this year :-(
- Cathy just left.
<Joanne> smiles... awww well.
<Mariejas> Maybe we could plot some collaborative venture in the future!!
<karl> Sounds like a plan!
<karl> Marie, Joanne, did either of you visit the
<karl> "student voices" section?
<Joanne> I did but couldn't get any of the videos to work
<karl> we put up some windows media files up after the initial complaints.
<Toshi> That's a good idea, Karl
<Mariejas> OK, Got to go - once again many thanks to you all!
<karl> did you try those?
<Joanne> Awwww... I'll have to go back
<karl> Bye Marie!
<joy> Bye Marie!
<Joanne> Take care Marie
<kelli> Bye, Marie
- Mariejas just left.
<karl> Please do Joanne, I am wondering if we should begin changing some of the mediums we use in the conference.
<karl> Toshi, how has your experience been in the conference?
<karl> Joanne please give us feedback in the online survey that will be up in a couple of hours.
<Joanne> I recall you used HorizonLive last year too, but this year I think it ran really well, with tech people right in each of the live workshops. And the keynotes were so awesome, they surely must have drawn people to the conference.
<karl> yes, the HL technology worked better this year than last. And Matt was wonderful!
<Joanne> I will. Thank you.
<Toshi> Excellen especially keynote#3, (but hard time in Japan(^_^)
<Joanne> Oh yes, he is so dynamic! I am not just going to throw away his e-mail ads any more!
<kelli> Hello Toshi, was it hard to connect to the Web site from Japan?
<Toshi> every Web site include Horizonlive can be see in good condition in Japan
<karl> Toshi, how can we get the conference to faculty in Japan in Japanese? It would be great if we could figure out how best to do that.
<karl> Joanne: :-)
<Toshi> I can make Japanese annoucement web site, if you need.
<kelli> I see the language translation can be difficult
<karl> Joanne, any final thoughts, ideas of inspiration you could provide? You have been a long-standing supporter.
<karl> Great Toshi!!!
<Toshi> There is "Japanese Distance Learning Society". That's will be helpful.
<Joanne> Mmmm... well if I could have one wish, it'd be to be notified by e-mail when the next conference is coming up. I always have to remember -- oh Spring! Time to find you folks! It seems I don't get whatever ads you place around.
<karl> We have to fix that!
<karl> please type your email here. and we will be sure to correct any errors.
<kelli> Oh that sounds good, Toshi. I'll look into the Japanese Distance Learning Society.
<joy> Joanne I think this year it was especially scarce since I also receive that comment from other particiapnts
<joy> But we hope to fix that problem.
<Joanne> Yay! It's goldenb@optonline.net Joanne Goldenberg
<karl> done Joanne.
<Toshi> Sorry, I missed the name. "Japan Distance Learning Association" http://jdla.tmit.ac.jp/
<Joanne> Thank you. :)
<kelli> Thank you, Toshi.
<joy> Thank you for participating again and your feedback!
<kelli> Thank you Joanne
<karl> Toshi we will visit the site. Also, please have a discussion with Mr. Kimura. I will be talking with him after the conference ends.
<Joanne> Thanks everyone for your hard work! It was really really appreciated.
<Toshi> Yes, I will do, Karl
<karl> You are very welcome Joanne! We thank you for continuing to participate. We will "look" for you next year!
<Joanne> Great!
<Joanne> If I've got my times right, I'm going to go wait for Shirley in the Ginger Room. Take care all!
- Joanne just left.
+ Charlene has arrived.
+ joy has arrived.
<BertK> hi charlene, thanks for dropping in
<Charlene> Hi, everyone! Great conference so far.
<karl> we had turned off the log earlier, but I just turned it back on. Sorry :-(
<Vinnie_flo> sitting next to flo--I take FULL responsibility!!!!
<karl> please continue with our comments..
<karl> Vinnie :-)
<karl> Charlene, what has changed in your opinion besides discussions on cheating online?
<karl> cheating is still an issue, just not the hotest topic.
<Charlene> The first conferences were all bound to paper, writing, just using everytyhing on-line as we used it f2f. Only make a few adjustments for the different medium. Now, we discuss how to best
<Charlene> Now we discuss best how to make us real to our students, how to treat them like real people, how to have credibility.
- BertK just left.
+ BertK has arrived.
- BertK just left.
<Charlene> We no longer dwell so much on when to use each medium of on-line, or how to use it. It is more like we are not dwelling so much on the medium as on the message.
+ BertK has arrived.
<karl> how has this change in focus impacted your attempt to ....
<Charlene> I am not teaching on-line currently. However, I know that my school would be interested in putting anatomy & physiology on-line (I teach it) and I am getting ideas on how to do just that.
+ vinnie has arrived.
<vinnie> anything else for me--flo is getting ancy
<Charlene> I am not thinking so much about the medium now. I am thinking about the student and what activities should be done.
- joy just left.
<Charlene> I am more into the teaching again as I am in f2f and not so much the novelty of on-line.
<karl> Thank you Vinnie, but I think we are OK. I appreciate you and flo taking the time to stop by. :-)
<BertK> thanks for the help. please thank flo as well. ok will do.
<Charlene> We have all changed so much since I started teaching 30 years ago. I used a manual typewriter.
- vinnie just left.
- Vinnie_flo just left.
<karl> With your background Charlene, maybe you could help define some things for us...
<Charlene> I had no thought of teaching anyone, anything other than f2f. Then we went through the era of novelty with teaching on-line. And now we are concentrating on subject and student and other things again.
<Charlene> What can I help you with?
<karl> What do you feel constitutes a community on your classrooms...
<Charlene> I don't quite understand your question.
<karl> how would you define a community?
<karl> When your students interact, at what point could you say they are a community?
<karl> I am trying to get a sense of what a community is, and hopefully apply to our conference.
<Charlene> That is a term I don't use, so maybe I am way off. I think that they become slowly a community over the course of the semester. I can always tell the first day of class -- no one talks after I walk in the room.
- BertK just left.
<Charlene> After a week or two, there is some chat and by the middle of the semester, everyone is talking with everyone. However, they are in various classes with each other. Now, how to apply that to our conference ----
<Charlene> Let me think a minute.
<Charlene> I feel as if we are a community when I can and do interact with others. It can be with chat as we are doing now, but it can also be asynchronous.
<karl> i like your interpretation of events in your classes.
<karl> it seems a "community" is built over time.
<karl> relationships established and nurtured.
<Charlene> In fact, forums are a big help. Yes, it is build over time. You are right. RElationships are established and nurtured.
<karl> we are thinking of creating groups early on prior to the conference starting... and
<Charlene> When I was in college, we felt attached and friends with people we had several classes with. Doing things together really helps.
<karl> have them collaborate. they would then bring to the conference a project,
<Charlene> With forums, there are usually a small number of people who write and after reading a few of everyone's writings and thoughts on a particular topic, I feel as if I am getting to know them.
<karl> they would have a personal interest in getting more involved.
<karl> good point.
<Charlene> I would like to talk with people I have talked with at other conferences. Allow the relationships to continue year after year.
<Charlene> It seems as if we just get a good working relationship with everyone and it is all over.
<karl> we need to perhaps establish communications early on and continue the dialogue. or as you suggest continue the nurturing after the conference is officially over.
<Charlene> I would not like to collaborate with someone ahead of time. That is, unless I knew the person. I would feel that I have too many irons in the fire now to get to know someone and do something with him/her.
<Charlene> however, to think about a particular topic. Have a list of topics to be discussed or questions to be discussed and form small groups around those items.
<Charlene> Have people discuss issues ahead of time with a few other people.
<karl> ok, good idea.
<Charlene> I love the fact that everything is kept open after the conference and we can still e-mail and communicate with others.
<karl> do you feel a "post conference" activity would be worth exploring? and if so what could the activities be?
<Charlene> Perhaps to have a chat room set up periodically over the year to find out if anyone has been able to deal with certain issues or has ideas or just to touch bases and keep friendships going.
<Charlene> Post conference activity would be great!
<karl> I like your suggestion :-)
<karl> Any last thoughts Charlene before I have to run?
<Charlene> I belong to the Human Anatomy & Physiology Society for college teachers and we have a list-serve. It runs continuously and it is like a running conversation. We ask each other questions and give opinions and answers when any topic comes up.
<Charlene> Sometimes we just relate amusing stories about students.
<Charlene> Having a bulliten board or forum format would be good.
<Charlene> With the forum a person would not have to be there to participate. That is, we would not have to attend at a particular time.
<Charlene> It has really been great to share my ideas with you!
<karl> Thank you Charlene! I appreciate your time.
<Charlene> Why is there a star by your name?
<Charlene> Thank you for listening!
<karl> the star indicates i am a "moderator" the authority to log the chat.
<Charlene> Now, how do I identify you next year? and know we talked this year?
<karl> I have to run :-( but i truly will take your thoughts, comments and suggestions into consideration.
<Charlene> Goodby.
<karl> My name is Karl Naito, co-coordinator for the conference.
<karl> knaito@hawaii.edu
<Charlene> You have my e-mail address?
<Charlene> charlene.newby@sbcglobal.net
<karl> thank you again Charlene, and I hope to "see" you online again. please add your email here...
<karl> thanks Charlene :-) Bye.
<Charlene> Bye
