Significant learning implies transformation in ways of thinking and in the making of meaning. We can specify some of the conditions which foster these qualitative changes: optimal cognitive development requires that the learner be active, interactive and reflective. When part of the learning design, these conditions are also motivational factors. The online environment presents both special opportunities and specific challenges for the instructor, both in designing a course structure to create the enriching and enabling conditions, and in avoiding non-productive behaviors. In this presentation I will outline some strategies for encouraging significant learning, using illustrations from a recent online course at a community college.
